Shabby chic and old world charm: the Danube is Central Europe’s blissful conduit. We follow it through three countries and capitals, where quiet lakes, historic towns and globally ranked restaurants await around every bend – as do a night in Budapest’s Gresham Palace, and another at Taubenkobel (where we’re the only bikers invited to stay).

We’ve plotted the perfect course from one energetic European gem to another, and we’re the only ones riding between them. Along the way, sink neck deep into the history of UNESCO Dresden, spend not one night but two enjoying the serene bike paths of the Spreewald (and sumptuous spa of our hotel), then cap it off by riding to the door of our hotel in the city of Spires.

Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are a nature lover’s delight. Snow-capped peaks, sparkling blue lakes, dense forest and vineyard-covered valleys come together (with a healthy spattering of designated bike trails) to leave outdoor enthusiasts spoiled for choice. Though these three countries are far from their bind in the Austro-Hungarian empire, what they do continue to share is a love of locally sourced food, stunning and varied landscapes and an appreciation for well-crafted wine.

Strolling is the perfect pace for those who want to stop and smell the tulips, or wander Holland’s bucolic countryside, historic cities, and tranquil canals. Experience UNESCO kinderdijik’s 19 windmills, taste the fare at a local oyster farm and hit the museum to marvel at the Dutch masters.

Tilt at windmills as you pedal the picturesque coast that inspired the Dutch Masters. Not many get to ride in Zeeland! Savour fresh oysters at a picnic abroad a fishing boat. Drool over traditional savoury pannekoeken (pancakes). Soak up the local jenever (gin). And stay at the 12-room Manoir Inter Scaldes (replete with a 3 Michelin-star restaurant).
