- Difficulty Level
Level 3
XLevel 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Follow the Legendary Road
In all our years, we’ve sampled few pairings finer than Bordeaux, land of legendary wine with equally lauded biking, and the Dordogne — verdant capital of foie gras. Explore the endless underground galleries of Rouffignac to discover 13,000-year-old prehistoric art. Ride right into the heart of Saint-Émilion, and through the lush countryside of Dordogne. Taste the very best of the region at private wine-making and Château tastings.

From Bordeaux, head south to the vineyards of Entre Deux Mers to set off on a rails-to-trails bike path toward a château lunch. Dinner tonight is among the striking medieval streets of St-Émilion.
Explore the Right Bank, home to the world's best Merlots then stop for a hands-on experience at a family-run winery. This evening, sample a Premier Grand Cru from one of the region's oldest vineyards.
Set out from Saint-Emilion and embark on a day-long traverse up the meandering river into the Bergerac region. This evening, we’ll reconvene in the kitchen for a cooking lesson from our hotel’s gourmet chef.
Take a step back in time and explore the medieval castle of Beynac then pedal the forest and castle laden lands of Dordogne. Take the afternoon at leisure, perhaps in the gardens or poolside.
Ride in the heart of Black Périgord where your path leads to 13,000-year-old prehistoric art in the Rouffignac cave. Shop in Le Bugue before a special final night celebration set among elegant gardens.
Enjoy a farewell breakfast at the hotel and au revoir at Libourne train station.

My most memorable moment was our ride through the Dordogne Valley. It was truly beautiful and I wish we could have spent another day there. The meals were fabulous... and the accommodations were some of the nicest I've ever stayed in. All in all, maybe the best vacation I've done.
— Jim Condry
Riding along historic routes, Butterfield and Robinson’s tour will have you staying in crumbling castles (like Le Vieux Logis and the Chateau Cordeillan-Bages), exploring vineyards, and tasting the best local cuisine available.
The Daily Meal
Level 3
Our average bike ride is 53 km, with the option one day to do a 102 km Century Ride. Our ride in the Entre Deux Mers lets you warm up your legs, as the topography is flat or very gently rolling. The Dordogne’s terrain means that each day involves a few challenging hills—but the climbs and descents are either short or gradual, ranging between 163m and 889m. Most roads are very quiet, with a few busier sections in towns.
What’s included? Everything you need. Plus everything you’d
want. Plus a few things you never knew you wanted ‘til you got them.
