- Difficulty Level
Level 3
XLevel 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Ride the Ancient Route
Traditionally, the Camino de Santiago is about soul searching, but we’re more interested in soul-stirring. It starts with riding while others walk, to feel serenity in the saddle. It continues in the farm-fresh meals we enjoy en route, and the passion of the people who prepare them. And it culminates at the resplendent Reis Católicos, a stone’s throw from the cathedral.

In the hills north of Leon, begin the journey pedalling through the rolling landscape. Dig into a lunch of local specialties (Sopa de trucha, anyone?) before touring Astorga's architectural marvels.
Pedal past the unconquered town of Castrillo de los Polvazares, en route for the legendary Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross). A scenic descent brings us to the symbolic pilgrim town of Ponferrada, home to the Castle of the Knights Templar.
Head to the mountaintop town of O'Cebreiro where we will peruse the village and its prehistoric Celtic limestone huts before setting off downhill, our descent taking us through the lush green Galician countryside.
Today our journey ends in the impressive shadow of the medieval Cathedral of Santiago, the legendary resting spot of Saint James the Apostle. After a casual tour of the town and a well-deserved drink, enjoy dinner in one of the town’s many restaurants.
Cycling the small roads along the rugged coast of Galicia, we’ll wind our way to today’s destination, Finisterre, where we’ll stop to dine on a fresh seafood lunch. Then, it’s head back to Santiago for a final afternoon of exploring and watching the pilgrims trickle into the plaza.
After one last hearty breakfast, make your own way to the Santiago airport or train station for your onward travels. Buen Camino Peregrino!

This trip was outstanding - maybe the best European B&R trip I have ever taken! The food blew me away in that it was consistently good everywhere we went, and the wine was jaw dropping. I do not know why it has taken me so long to get to Spain, but shame on me! B&R has opened the door to a new country for me - and I will be back!
