- Difficulty Level
Level 2
XLevel 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Getting Surreal in Spain
Soak up the warmth of the Med in a region we adore. Ride rolling volcanic hills dwarfed by the Pyrenees and explore villages stamped by time. Take sips and dips on B&R’s sailboat while cruising the Costa Brava, feast on farm-to-fork cuisine in Figueres, and let Spain’s best Dali guide pour drinks before an intimate art tour. Melt like a clock for this sensuous region.

We meet Barcelona before heading to Banyoles, a small but lively Catalan town. We’ll soar on a ribbon of road through the Garroxta to a small, medieval village in the Alt Empordà where we’ll lunch in the plaza.
Ride through the Alt Empordà, nestled between the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean. Stop for a café con leche in the village of San Llorenç before lunch at the Vinyeta winery.
Pedal to the Baix Emporda, where lush forests juxtapose fields of vineyards and olive groves. We'll lunch in one of Catalonia’s most beautiful villages, Ullastret. Tonight, meet with a native of Begur to steep in the history of the Empordá region.
Weave through a valley of medieval villages to the stunning costal town of Pals. The afternoon is yours to pedal deeper into the countryside or, rejuvenate at the spa. This evening, a lovely dinner and wine pairing at Bell-Lloc Winery await.
Enjoy a stunning ride from the seaside town of Tossa de Mar along the Med shore, with breathtaking views around every corner. Roll into Sant Feliu de Guixolls and board our private sailboat for a cruise up the coast.
Enjoy a final scrumptious breakfast together at the hotel before we say adéu in Barcelona.

Hotels

Mas Falgarona, Avinyonet de Puigventós
This quiet and serene hotel is located just outside of charming Figueres. Built in the 15thC, it is now a stylish, contemporary hotel with all modern amenities, yet it still retains its country charm thanks to the surrounding farmland. Mas Falgarona has been a labour of love for centuries with walls dating from the 15th, 17th and 21st century, the latter which transformed it to the hotel it is today. It is owned currently by a local family from Dali’s home town of Figueres. View hotel website »

Mas de Torrent, Torrent
Hotel Mas de Torrent, located in the heart of Empordà, is one of Catalonia’s most beautiful and luxurious hotels, and a very welcome sight at the end of a long day on the trail. It was once an old Catalan masia, a typical farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. Fully restored and the pride of the locals, it now boasts a swimming pool, tennis courts and massage service. This trip was outstanding - maybe the best European B&R trip I have ever taken! The food blew me away in that it was consistently good everywhere we went, and the wine was jaw dropping. I do not know why it has taken me so long to get to Spain, but shame on me! B&R has opened the door to a new country for me - and I will be back!

Level 2
The riding is varied with the majority of terrain being rolling hills and flat stretches on quiet country roads. There will be a couple of challenging climbs that can be conquered at your own pace (and perhaps even enjoyed, as they bring us to more amazing vistas!) In order to avoid some of the busier roads, our routes sometimes include unpaved gravel and dirt roads. The days’ distances range from 25 to 52 km (15.5 to 33 mi.), with options for more every day.
What’s included? Everything you need. Plus everything you’d
want. Plus a few things you never knew you wanted ‘til you got them.
In a word: everything. In ninety words? Signature B&R guides; local experts; unique, unforgettable biking and walking routes; private tours; authentic local cuisine; lessons and demonstrations; local artisanal wines; wine tastings; all victuals and libations; all the endorphins you can handle; new insight; interesting, fun and like-minded travel companions; a feeling of total freedom. In short: an extraordinary, hassle-free journey of discovery.
