- Difficulty Level
Level 3
XLevel 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Our little secret in Italy
Nowhere does the slowing down feel more apropos than Piemonte, the birthplace of Slow Food, where epicurean delights await around every corner and verdant vineyards abound. We pair our meals with many of the best vintages (on us, natch), then kick back at the intimate and gorgeous La Villa.

REQUEST A QUOTEDay by Day
Bike amid orchards and forests in the Roero hills before heading to the hotel to kick back with cocktails and a panoramic view.
Head straight to Barolo for some museum time and hilltop views on a bracing climb to La Morra. This evening, take part in a lighthearted Nebbiolo tasting with a local winemaker.
Start the day with a truffle hunt led by our friend Beppe in the hazelnut groves. The afternoon ride brings us to Barbaresco for a wine tasting before we continue to Alba, which we’ll call home for tonight.
We pedal our way to a stunning viewpoint this morning on the way to the village of Mango. Afterward, we head to the UNESCO-protected village of Monferrato and learn to make fresh pasta from a true master.
Loop through the winding roads of Monferrato, a lesser-known part of Piemonte. This evening Marco’s marvellous live music enlivens the cocktail hour as we dine al fresco in the hotel’s charming restaurant.
Enjoy a farewell breakfast in the peaceful hills, then say arrivederci in Turin.

B&R travel is seamless. The pre-trip informational packet was amazing, the guides were awesome, the food was delicious, the wine was flowing and our fellow riders were great! We loved our experience and would definitely return to ride skinny tires with your company again.
— Julianne Major
The outfitters’ six-day biking or walking excursion through the birthplace of the Slow Food movement features visits to nougat-makers, beekeepers, vintners and three or four Michelin-starred restaurants. First-time biker? Stick to the walking tour. Even with just a glass (or two) of Barolo on board, the hills are a challenge.
Departures
Level 3
The riding varies, with all varieties of uphill and down (and even—VERY occasionally—a hint of flat). Roads are delightfully quiet, although with the occasional short rough patch. Both hybrid and road bikes are perfectly suitable for this trip’s terrain and roads. If you complete the full option daily rather than taking advantage of van shuttles, the trip would be rated avid: e-bikes are highly recommended for anyone not in love with challenging hill climbs.
What’s included? Everything you need. Plus everything you’d
want. Plus a few things you never knew you wanted ‘til you got them.
In a word: everything. In ninety words? Signature B&R guides; local experts; unique, unforgettable biking and walking routes; private tours; authentic local cuisine; lessons and demonstrations; local artisanal wines; wine tastings; all victuals and libations; all the endorphins you can handle; new insight; interesting, fun and like-minded travel companions; a feeling of total freedom. In short: an extraordinary, hassle-free journey of discovery.
