- Difficulty Level
Level 2
XLevel 1: Occasional
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills—all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip.
Walking – 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill.
Level 2: Recreational
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over terrain that’s relatively flat but will include inclines and the occasional climb or two.
Walking – 8-12 km (5-7 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain, with occasional steeper climbs.
Level 3: Enthusiast
Biking – 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints or places of interest.
Level 4: Avid
Biking – Roughly 50 km (30 mi.) a day in consistently rolling countryside, with repeated climbs and longer options available.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) over terrain that varies between rolling and hilly, with a few steeper climbs.
Level 5: Expert
Biking – 50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km (62 mi.) options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.
Walking – 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day over fairly hilly terrain offering lots of challenges. Routes are along high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
Discovering Alentejo
‘Slowing down to see the world’ means seeing what others miss – and we’re the only ones going slowly enough to land exclusive invitations to Comenda Grande winery. Ride through Alentejo’s cork and olive groves, taste sublime reds, tour our friend’s farm-to-table estate, and experience the Goth architecture of Évora. We stake a spot on the gorgeous coast for two nights—discovering Arrábida Natural Park’s inimitable charm. Come explore Alentejo with us!

Our ride today begins deep in Alentejo, eventually slowing us down to enjoy a modern culinary experience at lunch. Pedal back to the hotel to relax before our friend charms us with old stories of Monsaraz. Our dinner host tonight gives us a warm welcome to the region!
Today your ride will immerse you in the incredible sweeping views of hilltop castles. Spot the Alqueva Reservoir along the way before relaxing back at the hotel. After a thoughtful farm-to-table dinner, get lost in the vivid starry sky with a local astronomer.
Through cork forests and olive groves we begin to experience the valuable resources in this region. Our friend Nuno introduces us to the family farm, sharing stories and wine over a home-cooked lunch. Tonight we explore the region deeper before parting ways to dine on our own.
Embark on a tranquil morning ride where we'll see the other side of Alentejo, the vast coastline through Tróia peninsula. Roll up to a private Herdade (country house) where the proprietor happily shows us around and shares a delightful lunch.
Leave directly from your hotel and cycle through a gorgeous protected region that stretches from the sea up to Palmela. You'll pause at an Azulejos factory before embarking on a mid-day boat ride along the coast.
We’ll depart the hotel this morning for the 40-minute drive to the Lisbon airport. For travellers wishing to stay on in the capital, taxis are readily available for the short drive into the city centre.

Hotels

São Lourenço do Barrocal
In the same family for over 200 years, the estate has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient oaks, olive groves and vineyards. Here, the feeling of being at home is intimately connected with the sense of belonging to the vastness of the land. In Alentejo, farm and landscape soon become your home. View hotel website »

Convento do Espinheiro, Evora
Housed in a stunning ex-monastery named for a hawthorn bush, Espinheiro leaves guests wanting for nothing. Its hallowed walls harbour two swimming pools, a spa, spacious and comfortable common areas, and rooms with views of olive groves and gardens. The fully consecrated church just off reception may not be of practical use to us, but it is a wonder to behold. View hotel website »

Casa Palmela, Arrábida
Planted in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park, Casa Palmela is a home with history. A former farm manor turned boutique hotel, the estate represents an escape from the hustle of urban life. Roam the 70 hectares of privately-owned land and settle down on your personal terrace to take it all in. View hotel website »
I don’t know how B&R does it – the quality of their trips is so consistently high! Just when we think they couldn’t do anything as good as our last trip, they do! Another fantastic experience with B&R.

Spend time in Lisbon
Lisbon was recently hailed as Europe’s hippest city, and its streets and squares crackle with youthful energy. It is perhaps the world’s most walkable major capital, and excellent restaurants abound among the shops and museums. We’ll happily recommend a city guide if you want an insider’s tour to enhance your stay here.
