East of Lisbon, across the Tagus River, Sprawls Alentejo, one of Portugal’s most beautiful – and fortunately for us, under-traveled-regions. Overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Alentejo is a culinary and cultural heartland of sleepy villages, fragrant farmland, cork forests, lush vineyards, and man-made lakes; from the gentle waters of Lake Maranhao (a classic B&R gem) to the cobbled streets of UNESCO-recognized Évora.

Head out for an epic loop ride departing from the hotel and toward the Alqueva Dam. Finish at the legendary vineyards of Monte dos Perdigões for a tour of the estate, followed by lunch and a wine tasting.

Stop by our friend Nuno’s farm to tour his family’s estate and see how the landowners have been living for the past century. Sample his wines over a delicious homemade meal.
Bid farewell to Évora for your final ride and last chance to enjoy the perfumed air of the Alentejo countryside. Your ride rolls into a glorious ending at the hamlet of Santiago do Escoura, where you’ll lunch at the famous restaurant of Manuel Azinheirinha.

In the same family for over 200 years, the estate has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient oaks, olive groves and vineyards. Here, the feeling of being at home is intimately connected with the sense of belonging to the vastness of the land. In Alentejo, farm and landscape soon become your home. View hotel website »
Housed in a stunning ex-monastery named for a hawthorn bush, Espinheiro leaves guests wanting for nothing. Its hallowed walls harbour two swimming pools, a spa, spacious and comfortable common areas, and rooms with views of olive groves and gardens. The fully consecrated church just off reception may not be of practical use to us, but it is a wonder to behold. View hotel website »
